Well ton of pix from yesterday and a lot I could write. It was a busy day in a number of ways.

I try to get a long with people–but I don’t deal well with haughty atttitude–no matter who’s giving it.

Still processing pix from my offline period.  I really have a bunch of shots up soon.

I’d set Labor Day to be the deadline for getting the bulk of my transition/relocation stuff done–but I don’t seem to be making it.

Oh well.  Do what I can.

Stay-at-home bathers threaten Japan’s ritual soak

Centuries-old tradition falls victim to country’s postwar economic success

    Justin McCurry in Tokyo
    Monday August 7, 2006
    The Guardian

Taiji Hamano slips into the scalding water of Kimurayu bathhouse without a moment’s hesitation. In seconds the 91-year-old is immersed from the neck down, his head framed by a flaking, hand-painted mural of Mount Fuji.

For Mr Hamano, a soak in the company of a handful of other men is a daily ritual stretching back decades. “We had a bathtub at home even when I was a boy but I much prefer coming here,” he says. “The bath is nice and big so you can stretch out and take your time. It’s a form of stress relief.”

But customers like Mr Hamano, who lives a few blocks away in this tranquil corner of Tokyo’s Nihonbashi district, are fast becoming a rarity.

In their heyday in the late 1960s there were almost 18,000 public bathhouses, or sento, in Japan, and almost 2,700 in Tokyo alone. Nationwide the figure has slumped to just over 5,000 and in the capital, weekly closures over the past 30 years have taken the total below 1,000.

The bathhouse culture fell victim to Japan’s postwar economic success, which by the 1960s had given working-class Tokyoites the means to buy new homes complete with their own baths and showers.

The rise of the stay-at-home bather has left many sento owners pessimistic about their long-term future. “We used to get more than 400 people a day, but now we’re lucky if we get 100,” says Nobutoshi Yoshida, owner of Kimura-yu, a ramshackle bathhouse that has changed little since it was built in 1930.

Rising costs and faltering attempts to improve bathhouses’ staid image threaten to bring to an end the Japanese ritual, stretching back 800 years, of relaxing in a tub of frighteningly hot water in the company of one’s neighbours.

In the postwar era a trip to the sento doubled up as a chance to catch up on the neighbourhood gossip; these days, however, “bathing out” is more likely to involve a trip to one of the super-sento that have sprouted up in big cities.

One of the most popular is Oedo Onsen Monogatari in Tokyo’s Odaiba district, a 5bn yen (£23m) collection of baths that re-create the atmosphere of 19th century Japan. Well over 4,500 people a day visit Oedo at weekends, many of them families who spend an entire day testing waters pumped from 1,400 metres below ground.

“The traditional sento were a part of daily life, but the super sento are for younger people and families who look on them as theme parks,” says Shinobu Machida, Japan’s foremost expert on sento and the author of six books on the subject. “The social side of going to a sento simply doesn’t appeal to younger Japanese.”

Tokyo’s sento association, which oversees all of the city’s bathhouses, has recently banned smoking in an attempt to attract younger bathers, for whom the traditional sento conjures unsavoury images of middle-aged men, wearing only a strategically placed hand towel, puffing on a cigarette as they cool off in the changing area.

“I’ve always found going to a sento more refreshing than bathing at home,” says Mr Machida, who has visited more than 2,300 bathhouses around Japan. “You can forget about a bad day at the office, chat with friends or just lie back and relax. That isn’t possible at home.”

But even a sento fanatic like Mr Machida admits that the Japanese tradition of hadaka no tsukiai (naked friendship) is on its way out. “Only old people seem to go to their neighbourhood sento these days,” he said. “The days when a father would take his young son have probably gone forever.”

Mr Yoshida, who greets each of his customers by name, appears resigned to his fate. “It wouldn’t come as much of a surprise if we closed down tomorrow,” he said. “On the other hand, regular bathing is part of what it means to be Japanese, so I haven’t given up hope yet.”

It’s Good to have Naked Friendship!!!

Actually it was late one night a couple of weeks ago and Josh was sending me pix of his snazzy paintball shirt from his secret base in North Texahoma and I was trying to ham up something to send back. I shouldn’t be allowed to do anything when sleepy either later at night or just getting up early in the morning–or whenever.  Haha

Well different things are still on my mine–but maybe I’ll try a real Wil Blog.

PC still gltichy.  I think part of it may be Microsoft catching up on two months of downloads–it’s just much of the time it doesn’t tell you it’s doing that and it runs like crap forever until MS gleefully announces you’ve been downloaded and feel free to drop everything and reboot your computer.

However when the guy was installing the cable– a little yellow balloon popped up saying I may not be able to do much of anything with the cable hook up.  Cough.  Some things have been faster–some things aren’t happening at all–like trying to check and receive Norton and MS downloads–though MS has downloaded updates on it’s own a few times the last two days..  The adware program I used updated ok. I don’t think I’ve ever had a Norton program that has totally and successfully worked for me more than 6 months at a time–so I guess issues are right on schedule–though it worked like it should before the move.

Cable gentleman also said I probably need more memory, replace IE with mozilla firefox, and that too many operating systems may have been overlayed upon one another and the whole thing might should be wiped clean and reinstalled fresh.  Maybe.

    Haha

Well it’s been two months and a lot I could write about–but maybe this is enough for now.  There was fun and games yesterday concerning me and Steve vs some US Rep (former now thank God) Cynthia McKinney supporters at one of the polling places near where Steve lives. You may have seen some things about her on TV over time–like scuffling with the US Capitol police because they didn’t happen to know who she was on sight– among other things.  My new/old house of course.  The move itself. Haha  The visit to Ft Jackson for Josh’s graduation from army boot camp, and my subsequent dodging of hooker brigades in Columbia and Charleston SC.  That little patriotic July 4th riot in the CNN Center that went virtually unreported anywhere. I was in the middle of it and several hundred people stampeding at me–I dunno–looked like a riot to me.  The recentish Savannah trip-which aside from the wheel popping off Steve’s car on I- 16 between Macon and Savannah was actually a fun trip.  Joseph’s visit from Fresno Prime.  The art gallery opening I was invited to which in reality was a new downtown bank opening and I was in shorts and Hawaiian shirt. haha   I’ll get caught up over time.

Events on the event horizon include more housy stuff, eventually work hunting, Joe’s boot camp graduation on Labor Day weekend, and of course–holiday decorating!

Well I guess I sorta have home internet again, but now that the guy’s gone it’s acting sort of glitchy.  This cable hook up is supposed to be so quick but so far it’s only a little better than my dial-up was–though he said I probably needed more memory on here too.  At this point I’m sort of tired of fooling with it today.

I was trying to work on my t-mobile online album to transfer pix to my pc but only got part way with it all.  Lets see if I have anything that did get transfered.  I was going to move all these pix to my pc and do this All Your Wil Are Belong To Us parody–but at this point I think I need to rest my eyes or something.

    Well crap.   Nada new.

    Well–haha—

    Pix and stories soon!

    I hope.

Breathe easy — today you will get a lot closer to answering the questions you’ve been wrestling with. Before the day is through, you’ll be taken to the right place and given all the right tools to contemplate your situation and think through your options. There’s no such thing as bad answers — just right answers. So don’t be afraid to dig deep into your subconscious and face some nagging fears. This may be a time when you have to give something up to get something you need.

Have you noticed that since I’ve been offline the world trying to go to hell?

Hopefully Monday I’ll be able to get back to cracking heads and make everyone in the world play nice or nicer.

    Dear Patsy–

I’m still offline for two more weeks so checking mail on Steve’s computer.  Bill still wiring the house but they’re going out west for 9 days.  Steve and I went downtown to see fireworks–got rained out–was in the middle of riots in CNN Center. News says “some fights broke out ” when people tried to get in from rain.  Got locked in Jocks and Jills.  Bleh.  Ate dinner.  hahah

Josh’s graduation from boot was nice.  Went to Charleston.

Can you pick up my mail next Monday and Tuesday? Going to Graceland with Steve and some people.  Voice audition tomorrow.

    More soon!

    Thanx for the e-mail prayer!

    Wil
